Men’s FIFA world cup 2022 says that fans will not be allowed to buy alcohol around World Cup stadiums in Doha despite Budweiser sponsoring the actual event. With passionate fans and players around the world descending on Qatar, tonight a sudden reversal from Qatari officials announced beer will be banned inside stadiums in the conservative Muslim country despite Budweiser’s $75 million sponsorship

Doha, Qatar – It was supposed to be a simple job for Qatari security officials: to keep fans of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo from consuming alcohol inside five World Cup venues.

The alcohol ban, introduced for this year’s tournament as part of an effort to keep foreign visitors safe, meant that beer kegs and alcoholic beverages would be banned at the four Khalifa International Stadiums as well as at the FIFA Fan Fest and during concerts in Lusail Park, a series of water parks, and at the Mudaif Festival, an outdoor music festival held every year on the eve of the first day of the World Cup.

Budweiser – which is the official beer of the tournament – is the first international sponsor for the tournament after Adidas left the 2022 event.

The tournament is in its full action across 11 venues throughout Qatar and the capital Doha from December 18 to January 15 next year.

“Alcoholic beverages have no part in what Qatar stands for and there is no room for such behavior when the 2022 FIFA World Cup comes to Doha”, a Qatari 2022 LOC spokesman said in the statement.

They continued: “Alcoholic beverages are banned from public areas of all Qatari government facilities, including venues and stadiums.

“Our venues must adhere to strict safety standards in order to host events that do not endanger the health of people who attend.”

The local organizing committee added that fans could bring their own alcohol to games at stadiums, but they will have to check in with the local security team before entering the stadium.

Budweiser did not immediately respond to a request for comment from ESPN on whether it has been notified about the ban.

FIFA said last week that Doha had won the rights to host its first men’s World Cup in 2026, but in a statement published on FIFA’s website, it noted that the event will be “carried out within strict regulations” and that fans will not be permitted to drink alcohol outside matches or events at venues hosting games.

A spokesman for Budweiser told BBC News

We are deeply committed to FIFA and the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar as we look forward to celebrating the global excitement of the tournament with our customers and the hundreds of millions of passionate soccer fans.

A covering of controversy has long loomed over the tournament with the small gulf nation under extreme scrutiny for its track record on human rights. Qatar spent billions to modernize ahead of the world cup, work often done in heartless conditions and sweltering heat by migrant lane errors from Nepal and India. They say thousands of workers have died since Qatar was named as host a decade ago.  Those who died, those who were injured, and those who lost their wages to construct and build, prepare Qatar. Deliver on this world cup. Qatar’s government has not responded to NBC news’s request for comment. Officials have previously said they are committed to engaging collaboratively and constructively to further improve standards for all migrant workers in Qatar. The country is also under serious scrutiny for its treatment of LGBTQ people, same-sex relationships are illegal here.
